McKenzie Outfitters offers archery Whitetail hunts on a sprawling cattle operation, family owned and operated for three generations. The operation is nestled along the picturesque Souris River. The river and steep ravines, ridges and towering bluffs covered in oak, maple, elm, ash and birch border the property on the south. It is interspersed with Saskatoon, Chokecherry, Cranberry and many other bushes and shrubs mixed into the undergrowth and meadows. Head north & the valley gives way to rolling terrain with potholes, Poplar grooves, diamond willows, silver willow and native grasses. Amongst this mosaic landscape our forefathers tilled small agricultural fields, which are now rotated with alfalfa and other hay crops for the cattle operation. The local wildlife ranges from nesting bald eagles, coyotes, badgers, great horned owls, eagles, hawks, porcupines, beaver, muskrat, mink, coon, moose, elk and much more.

The local deer herd is extremely healthy with a good buck to doe ratio. Our biggest overall factor with the local deer herd is how severe the previous winter was. We concentrate on mature bucks with 140"+ with good mass and let the younger ones reach their potential. We typically have 100% opportunity in bucks with 5x5 or bigger racks. Around 50% get a shot off and have about a 25% harvest rate. We have dozens of tree stands set up before your arrival and we can always adjust as we go to meet your needs. Ground blinds are in place where trees aren't just right. With the rolling terrain you can also still-hunt or spot and stalk. YES, it can be done with the bow and what a rush!

The bow season starts in late August and extends into the first week of November. The early season allows for a chance at a velvet buck and the opportunity to hunt some truly impressive bachelor groups. We get the most daylight photos of mature bucks during this time of year.

Mid season finds the bucks still together but polished up ready for the up coming rut. Mid season often finds agricultural practices making food sources a boom or bust. And we set up enroute from bedding areas to preferred fields.

Late season sees the bucks break out of the bachelor groups. Their meetings become laced with tension. Rub lines predominate the edges of alfalfa fields and lead back into the coulees. Ask my regulars about mega rubs over in the stone house field! We set up on major rub lines and scrapes between bedding areas or crop land. Leaves go through their vibrant colors changes during this time of year, and their loss results in loss of valuable cover in some of our shorter trees and the weather can be unpredictable. Unfortunately, the hunt wraps up before the rut begins, but genetics will only improve & they will be bigger next year!
